Sorry for the delay in answering - crazy week! To answer your question, when travelling, my wife and I tend to stay away from "touristy" spots, and look for places where the locals and regualrs hang out - a place where you can strike up a conversation or just chill with a beer.
Last trip to the Mayan Riviera two years ago (last year's trip was Maui), we went zip-lining, swimming in cenotes and scuba diving. Not planning any excusions this year other than biking around town and a day trip to Cozumel.
So where are the best places in town to eat, or just watch the world go by? We arrive March 23rd.
Thanks Russ, Casa Playa Maya is my secret lover you know. So how come I am not on Places 2 Stay? Come back in May, I'll keep the beer cold and have a safe trip back.

Thanks for the welcome Russ. I justed checked your profile and saw you're from NJ. Remind me to tell you some fun stories about partying in Wildwood! Come to think of it, the first time my wife and I visited Playa del Carmen, we met some fun folks from New Jersey at Carlos & Charlies.
The last time we visited, we were staying down the road at the Barcelo Maya (great spot!). We loved it so much, we're staying right in town next time so we can take our time exploring all of Playa Del Carmen - we'll be be there the second last week of March.
In reading some of the posts from other club members, it appears as though you know the town quite well. Any advice you have to share about where to go and what to avoid (if there is anything) would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Russ: so sorry that we are going to miss you. We leave Sat morning for Isles. But we will be back. Is there anyplace we should go tonight? Our last night. A good Mexican restaurant. Or anyone we should meet while we're here? Are you affiliated with the Parrot Club at all? We are so enjoying the beach and just walking around, drinking, eating, shopping,helping the local economy....So sorry we'll miss you.

hey can you tell me sum nice places to goto when im in playa that are off the beatn path? you know places only you would know of from going there for so long? like a good resturant to goto with my g/f when we are there. And any places along the beach where we can walk to that is amazing>? you know like a hidden cave or sumthing like that? thanks. Have fun.

Ha i know what you mean! next year iam hoping to stay for 2weeks, would like to find a place where i could come back each year.. like if sumone had a place down there and we could rent it off of them you know? but forsure get yourself together! my mom and her husband are also down there feb 28th - mar 7th too, she is on here her name is midnite. talk to you soon! have a great trip! c u down there ;)
I'm from Houston too.. and there is no danger that i know of? unless of course you go to the places where you would find yourself in danger, that is like going to 5th ward or 3rd ward in Houston. its ok to come down, I drove down here with my 10 y...
