yes, I stayed at Sandos Caracol last summer... for 2 weeks.
I liked the resort very much...
well I'll try to answer your questions...
Firstly I wanna tell you that you are very lucky because of the free upgrade to the Select Club! It is a very nice portion of the Resort but it is not in front of the beach .... . I didn't stayed in the Select Club part but my room was located very near... so, I was quite far from the beach, but in my opinion it wasn't a bother ... well... this is a decision that you have to make... I can only tell you that the Select Club portion is located in the opposite side of the Hotel. So you have to think very well if it isn't a problem for you to go every time there.
But I want to tell you that the hotel is very beautiful... with a lot of facilities!!!! I'm sure you and your family will enjoy your holiday!
The only disadvantage of the hotel is the position... in my opinion.... because the hotel isn't in Playa del Carmen but 20-30 minutes far from the city centre.. Anyway the Hotel provides free buses every 2 hours that take you to the downtown of Playa.
If you want to get a taxi the hotel will call one for you. The cost is 100mexican pesos (or 10 dollars).

You have picked a great family friendly resort. VERY popular with the younger children. They also have a kids club from 2 yr up to 17 yr There's even a children's play area . You guys are going to have fun

Sandos has 3 properties they kind'a lump together and often get confused in the booking process. Sandos Caracol, Sandos Playacar Riviera and Sandos Playacar Beach.
Sandos Caracol is is not in Playa Del Carmen but transportations is provided to Playa Del Carmen and depending where your room is it can be a bit of a walk to the actual sand. Sandos Playacar Beach is located In Playacar (south of the ferry dock in Playa) and it on the beach and Sandos Playacar Riviera which is off the beach but In Playacar with beach access via Sandos Playacar Beach.
Check with your travel agent to be sure where you are booked..... all of them are nice resorts and far different than Disney (-;
