As far as where to start on your vacation, thats very simple, the 2 resorts I suggested are in the HEART of town, so you are within walking distance to everything, shops, arts and crafts, galleries, nightlife, restaurants. Though both are complete all inclusive where all you can eat meals and drinks (including alcohol) are included.... If you dont mind being 5 minutes by cab from the center, then there are many other choices.
Along the Mayan Riviera itself, there are lots of beautiful resorts, and they are within 10 - 30 minutes from the heart of Playa del Carmen, depending on the location, they also vary in price, and the farther they are from town, typicaly the less expensive, though the quality is still great.
I can get you costs on rooms for the hotels you like but it would help if you can give me some idea on dates, even approximate dates would help and then I can pick say 3 of my favorites and send you pricing.
