Renting from locals

Im' considering staying one to three months in playa starting in january. What about renting a room from locals? I would think two to three hundred dollars a month would be a lot to them. Why have I never heard of this possibility rent situation before? Please respond.

Thanks Russ, This helps but I heard the Mexican gov't would be allowing card games in 2010 and casinos were being built now in Playa del Carmen which would have card games. I deal cards so if you do here anymore about this I would REALLY appreciat...
