The Playa Del Carmen Social Club

South of Cancun, north of Tulum in the heart of the Riviera Maya

My wife and I have been trying to plan a trip to Cozumel(August 21-24th) for a few weeks now but we were at odds over the hotels. I wanted to stay in town and eat the real mexican food and see some culture but she wanted to stay on the South side of the Island and just lounge around all day. When we finally sat down to pick a hotel we found a lot of under handed tricks such as hotels that are in the middle of the island posting pictures of the beach as if they were beachfront. Or hotels posting false maps on their websites. Checked the physical address and they were in different locations. Anyway through hours and hours of searching we found a great looking hotel, playa palms, turns out it's in playa del carmen which looks just as great as Cozumel. After all the tricks and horror stories of thugish cab drivers, and over crowding due to the cruise ships we are leaning towards staying in La Playa del Carmen. Problem is we know nothing about it. It just looks great. We are both divers and want to go diving but other than that we just want to drink corona on the beach, eat some giant shrimp and great Mexican food. Everything after that is a bonus. I guess my question boil down to this.

1. Is Playa Palms a good hotel? Looks great and has good reviews.

2. How does Del Carmen Diving stack up to Cozumel diving and What dive shop should I use? Padi approved preferable.

3. How is Del carmen food and culture compared to Cozumel?

4. I have heard the prices and over crowding are much better in Playa is this true?

5. Perhaps the biggest one is how much is the people ferry to Cozumel and would it be doable to fly into cozumel and take the ferry to Playa? All the flights out of Cancun back home don't really fit our schedule.

6. Do the Famous reefs surround Del Carmen as well? I would love to be able to swim out and snorkel a reef while the wife gets a tan.

Sorry for the long post but I'm tired of searching and searching. Figure why not ask the people who know directly.

I wish we could answer your questions. We have always stayed in Playa, and really love it. But we are not divers though. When booking the hotel in Playa, check about the beach erosion, rocks. Some places were getting hit very hard by erosion. We always travel by taxi in and around Playa, and have had only one bad experience in many taxi rides. Hope this will help some.

You cant beat the Barracuda for a place to stay, right on the ocean, next to Margaritaville and across the street from the Mega store, me and my wife are planning our holiday for Feb 2010 and the Barracuda is on the top of the list.

HEY GUYS! WENT TO PLAYA IN APRIL AND GOING BACK AUG 25TH. STAYED AT THE SHANGRI-LA CARIBE. JUST OUT OF TOWN BUT CLOSE ENOUGH TO WALK AND CAB BACK IF YOU GET TIRED. FERRY IS A EASY THING. FEW MINUTES BY CAB FROM HOTEL. COZUMEL'S A SHORT RIDE (30 MINUTES IF I REMEMBER). THE HOTEL HAS A GREAT DIVE INSTRUCTOR. HOPE THIS HELPS. WE LIKED IT SO MUCH WE ARE GOING BACK AND BRINGING FRIENDS. IT IS SMACK ON THE BEACH! I WOULD LIKE TO CAUTION THAT SOME OF THE HOTELS IN TOWN OR ON THE BEACH IN TOWN ARE QUITE NOISY AT TIMES.
